AUV SAPPHIRE WINDOWS DESIGNED FOR DEEPWATER SERVICE

Custom fabricated sapphire windows that are designed for high-pressure applications in unmanned underwater surveillance vehicles (AUV and UUV)
are being introduced by Meller Optics, Inc. of Providence, Rhode Island.
Meller Sapphire Windows and Domes for AUV applications feature varying wall thicknesses and include stepped edges and elliptical edge shaping, holes, slots, and wedges for mounting to permit operation at 10,000 psi pressures. Second only to diamond at Mohs 9 hardness, sapphire windows provide outboard surface protection for imaging sensors and vision systems by withstanding saltwater, sand, and other fast moving particulates.
Providing a smooth, flat surface to help prevent algae growth, Meller Sapphire Windows and Domes for AUV applications are manufactured to OEM specifications in a wide range of shapes and sizes from 0.25” to 10” dia., with varying wall thicknesses and design characteristics, as noted above. Surface finishes can be held to 10-5 scratch-dig, roughness to less than or equal to 0.3 nm RA, and flatness to 0.5 fringes HeNe.
