Custom fabricated sapphire windows and domes that provide front surface protection for gimbaled systems that operate in severe and demanding environments have been introduced by Meller Optics, Inc. of Providence, RI.

Meller Sapphire Windows & Domes protect gimbaled targeting and vision systems that are used in severe environments where they will be exposed to fast moving dirt, sand, and salt water. Featuring Mohs 9 hardness, which is second only to diamond, they can be fabricated in sizes and shapes to match precise gimbaled housing design requirements and can include multi-spectral anti-reflective coatings that can meet salt fog requirements.

Offered in sizes from 0.25” to 10” dia. with varying thicknesses, Meller Sapphire Windows & Domes can include special features such as elliptical edge shaping, holes, slots, steps, and mounting wedges. Surface finishes range from 60-40 to 40-20 scratch dig, depending upon configuration with flatness held to 1/10th wave in the visible.
